For the gallery the tour is definitely needed unless you are an expert in renaissance paintings and sculpting. I’d like a hit more time in the gallery itself. The tickets are sold out unless you book the tour like this or buy them far in advance. We had a great tour guide who was able to really tell a story about each artist and sculptor and lead us through the masterpieces.
It was our first tour in Rome. Right after arrival in Marriott Flore Hotel, we hopped on taxi and found the meeting point. But first the tour coordinator were not visible, we were pointed to here abd there in that 90 degree weatger and I am a handicapped, walking with a cane. We waited and waited, finally, the guy with blue shirt showed up(he put on his blue shirt suddenly). Then we started following him, but he turned us away and pointted to another guy wearing a baggy red t-shirt and in a pair of baggy shorts., saying go to him, he is your guide! We tgen went to join this red shirt guy’s team. Waitted over 3:30, he took us to lock up our bags in a cage, then to the entrance. At the entrance, he was denyed entering to the gallery as an tour guide. He spent over 30 minutes begotiating, but in vain. We waitted and waitted, he then showed up and collectted our head sets, and told us to be on our iwn!!!! We were all of a sudden been abandened! We were wondering around like idiots! We could have been provided with a substitude guide or even an audio guide from the gallery!!!! This was very unheard of, and you, Viator, should be responsible for our loss, because it is Viator’s job to secure the credential of all your tour guides. We were so looking forward to this gallery tour, but were so so left down!!!
I am so glad that I booked this tour. Although I had never heard of the Borghese Gallery, I read that it was worth the visit, and it was. One of the things that I loved was the fact that it was not as crowded as all of the other attractions in Rome. This was actually the last tour I took on my last day in Rome. I loved my tour guide Rebecca. She's an American who has been living in Europe for many years so her insights were great. I wish I had met her on my first day in Italy rather than my last. Her commentary on the masterpieces at the gallery were invaluable. I loved seeing the paintings and sculptures that were highlighted on the tour. It was amazing to see the works of Bernini, Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian and others. I know that telling others to go to the Borghese meands that it will become more crowded, but it really is worth going to see. If you can get Rebecca as your guide it will be the icing on the cake.
Our guide was very knowledgeable about art and history, and gave us an enthusiastic, enjoyable tour. She spoke clearly and the audio was easy to hear and understand unlike some tours we have had. The only small complaint I have is about the bag-checking procedure. Bags and purses are not allowed in the gallery, so we had to check them before the tour. Before going outside for the garden portion of the tour, we retrieved our bags, but there was a delay and rather chaotic crush of people -- no organized line. They need to improve the bag retrieval system. Otherwise, we enjoyed the tour very much!
