National War Museum

1 anmeldelse

The 16th-century star-shaped Fort St Elmo at the north-eastern tip of Valletta’s fortifications is currently under renovation and designated to reopen in 2015 as Valletta’s definitive museum of military history. In the meantime the lower part of the fort is the home of the National War Museum, which has a specialist collection of 20th-century World War memorabilia and culminates in a somber memorial to all who died to safeguard Malta’s freedom.

Revamped in 2009, with all exhibits clearly labeled in several languages, this engaging museum provides a chronological walk through both world wars, and highlights of the collection include guns, torpedos, model ships, tanks, airplanes, and gas masks. Flickering black-and-white films showcase the Maltese struggle against relentless German bombardment and siege in 1940–42 during WWII.
