There’s plenty to do and see in the coastal town of Playa del Carmen. Originally a quiet fishing town, the now thriving tourist destination has undergone lots of development in previous years. Located on the Riviera Maya, its close proximity to rugged outdoors, beautiful beaches and ancient ruins makes it the perfect place to spend three days exploring.
Day 1: Enjoy Playa del Carmen
Start your day with sunrise on the beach before heading to Playacar. Wander the aviary filled with indigenous birds or play a few holes on the world class golf course. Hire a bike and ride along the 4 kilometer path along 10 Avenue, where it’s easy to access shopping and boutiques along 5th Avenue. Round out the day with a visit to the Jungle Place sanctuary, where spider monkeys and other local wildlife swing from the trees.
Day 2: Explore the Ruins
Escape the modern day city and travel back to the past on a visit to Chichen Itza. These world-famous ruins rank among the nation’s most popular sites, with more than one million tourists visiting annually. Ancient pyramids are tucked among lush green forests, making it the perfect place to snap some photos while experiencing the nation’s rich culture, history and Mayan tradition.
Day 3: Tap into Adventure
Spend the day experiencing adventure just outside the city limits at Xplor Adventure Park. Float along a winding underground river between natural rock formations, speed through stalactites and stalagmites on a wild zip line ride or bog through dark swamplands in a vehicle made for any terrain. While admission to this epic destination may be a little pricey for a seriously budget conscious traveler, food and drinks are included and a day spent below ground in this natural wonderland is sure to result in lasting Mexican memories.
